Can we normalise not killing off traumatized characters when they're so freakin close to a happy ending?

It's heartbreaking when the character you've been rooting for is killed off so that the plot could move forward. Like why do you have to kill the when they are so close to finding happiness. I mean, why did they have to kill Enzo when he was inches away from leading a life that he always wanted. Same goes for Stephan as well.

What perverse pleasure do the makers get out of it I don't understand. Can you think of any characters who went through trauma and when they finally see a ray of hope, they face the door of death?
