Movies like Coolie No. 1, No Longer Relevant?

I am a huge fan of both Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan, so much so, that I was really excited to watch their new movie – a remake of 1995 “Coolie No. 1” - as soon as it came out on Christmas day (2020). I figured, 20 years have passed, so some things should have changed in the plot of the movie right? I thought they might remake the movie – but with a twist.

I know the 1995 version of the movie was a huge hit, featuring Govinda and Karishma Kapoor, but times have changed since then… no such luck. I was sorely disappointed when I watched the movie and found it to be an exact replica of the older movie. Nothing had changed. The woman’s voice was still being suppressed and they were still treated like objects. Not to mention, the men were talked down to as soon as their lower level jobs were revealed.

The 2020 movie made the disgust in lower level jobs even MORE prominent. Shouldn’t it have been the other way around? The newer movie should have at least given the women a better role and showed working class men being treated like – well - humans. It is clear that David Dhawan did not take into account the new century we are living in while directing this movie. Both Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan looked good and danced well, and yes, the music was catchy.

But is that enough anymore? As much as I love masala films, I strongly believe they need to stay at least somewhat current with our times. What do you think? Did the new “Coolie No. 1” bother you as much as it did me?
