Did Shah Rukh Khan Undeservingly Win Best Actor Award Over Aamir Khan in 1996?

In 1996, almost every conceivable award in the rule book went to one film that did not just create cinematic history, but also won almost every Indian heart. Aditya Chopra's debut directorial Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge it was. When Shah Rukh Khan was announced the Best Actor in almost every award function that year, especially Filmfare Awards, we lost our last opportunity to make Aamir Khan attend popular awards.

Yes, it was the snubbing of Aamir Khan that year which made lose his complete faith in India's popular award functions. Aamir Khan was also nominated for his performance in Ram Gopal Varma's Rangeela. Portraying the character of a roadside romeo, Aamir Khan as Munna was simply flawless. In all honesty, it wasn't just a great performance of that year, but also in a very very long time. Aamir as Munna had pulled off something special, and it only would have made sense had the jury recognised this and handed him the best actor trophy which instead went to SRK for DDLJ.

Now, Shah Rukh's performance in no way was any less credible. But when it comes to choosing the best, shouldn't the jury have not given into the popular sentiment but stayed a little objective instead? Aamir Khan lost all his faith in awards and rightly so. It was a very very special performance that was not acknowledged by the juries. Not just Best Actor, the Best Actress award went to Kajol that year when the fellow nominee included Seema Biswas for Bandit Queen.

Shah Rukh Khan did get lucky and the larger sentiment over the years has sparked a dialogue. Did Shah Rukh undervingly win the best actor award over Aamir Khan that year?
