Do Songs Save Films?

This is a question one must really contemplate when watching a Bollywood film. More often than not, a mediocre film is saved by a good soundtrack, and I cannot help but wonder if that really is a good thing. While there are exceptions, most films promote their songs and cast more than the story itself, which makes the music feel like a cover-up for a shabby plot. Do you feel that Bollywood films, especially in the past two decades, have come to rely on their soundtrack to appeal to an audience?
