Makers of 'Dostana 2' are toning down the gay theme fearing a backlash

Recently, it was reported that the makers of Karan Johar's production venture 'Dostana 2' are toning down on the gay angle of its story. It is due to the increasing atmosphere of intolerance and backlash of the film. The film stars Kartik Aaryan and Janhvi Kapoor in the lead, is the sequel to the successful 2008 film 'Dostana.' The original film had a humorous take on homosexuality in India. Since then, we have had films that still make fun of gay characters. But we also got an 'Aligarh', which portrayed a homosexual man in the most realistic and humane way possible. In an increasingly thin-skinned society, makers are trying to avoid trouble by tailoring their content. Recently, the second season of 'The Family Man' was pushed for the very same reason.

The fear is that the essence of the content might get lost in this process. Also, playing down on the gay angle which is the main theme of the film doesn't feel right. On 6 September 2018, consensual gay sex was legalized by the Supreme Court. This gave strength to a lot of people in the LGBTQ+ community to come out of their closets. And we were hoping to see their stories more often on screen. But this update feels like hundred steps backward after two steps forward. What do you think? Comment down your thoughts.
