Was Karan Johar unfair towards Kareena Kapoor despite her being a starkid, as she demanded equal pay?

According to reports, Karan Johar had asked his close friend, Kareena Kapoor to play the character of Naina in Kal Ho Na Ho alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan. Kareena, who was then a newbie in Bollywood, demanded equal pay as SRK. Karan tried to negotiate with her but she even refused to take his calls. That's how Preity Zinta got the iconic role of Naina.

The two gossip lovers, Karan and Kareena did not speak with each other for almost nine months. However, Kareena called him after she heard about his father's demise and sorted things with him. Karan has himself mentioned of this incident in his autobiography, An Unsuitable Boy.

This highlights two things- first that Karan knows his limits. Kareena is a starkid and a 'Kapoor'. Karan had many reasons to accept her demands but he didn't. So he knows that starkids won't get it all they ask for; and second is that Kareena has been clear about her worth since her early days in this industry. We have seen her talking about the pay disparity that exists in Bollywood at various events. Who was right in this case?
