What makes Irrfan Khan great?

Last year, today, the world lost a great talent. A talent who had been in the business for more than two decades, delivering one great performance after the other. But it a bunch of international projects for people in his own country to take notice of him. He was Irrfan Khan. He started out doing small roles in television and later did Mira Nair's 'Salaam Bombay', which was nominated for the Oscars. But for me, his role in 'Maqbool' stood out when I watched it for the first time without knowing who he was.

Watching Irrfan perform, one might feel that he underplays a character. But it was more than that. His ability to play ordinary characters with an extraordinary presence makes it memorable. Be it the title character in Maqbool, the athlete turned dacoit in 'Paan Singh Tomar' or a government employee finding love through lunchboxes in the lovely film 'The Lunchbox.' Irrfan has left us. But his presence hasn't. He will be remembered through his roles. The way he delivered an emotion just with his eyes.
