Why Bollywood has stopped making great comedy films?

Gone are the days of the Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Andaz Apna Apna, Hera Pheri, or to some extend, Welcome. The films that we all so love and still remember. Most of these films have taken a life of their own through memes and their iconic scenes or dialogues. But for the past decade, Bollywood seems to have stopped making great comedy films. Of course 'great' is a big word, but I mean something that everyone could enjoy. Now we only see homophobic, misogynistic, and double-meaning jokes are being passed on as humor.

So what really happened? It's not that there isn't an audience for comedy movies. But film people aren't making it anymore. Maybe commerce took over art and so did cheap laughs over genuinely funny moments. In the day and age of content-driven stories, we can expect comedies of all kinds, rooted or even downright silly. And not toilet humor which surprisingly makes 100s of crores at the box office. Let's hope this generation can have their own 'Andaz Apna Apna' or 'Hera Pheri.' Till then, we can re-watch these gems.
