Will Bollywood Expect Varun Dhawan To “Settle Down” Now That He’s Married?

Now that one of the top actors in India has gotten married, will Bollywood and society expect him to "settle down", as they would if an actress had just gotten married? Regardless of how "progressive" we as a society appear to have become, I believe it's all a facade. The roots of sexism and patriarchy are so deeply embedded within us, that we unconsciously bend to its whims.

Back in the day, fabulous actresses like Sri Devi, Kajol, Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor and many more, left acting right after marriage as if it was some right of passage. After their weddings, their fame and popularity fell and they didn't get the offers like they would in the past.

Yes, one could argue that times have changed, just look at Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma. But you cannot deny that priorities after marriage change, and even they are becoming more selective with their films. Months after their weddings, people started speculating pregnancies and sabbaticals.

Ultimately, I feel like it all boils down too patriarchy. Bollywood could go on and on about feminism, and I would not buy it. Why is it that when someone as brilliant as Deepika Padukone does a woman-centric film like Chhapaak, the film underperforms at the box office, but when she does a "masala-flick" with a mainstream hero, that film will become a super hit.

We reduce the value of an actress after she gets married, for absolutely no reason. But, would we do the same for an actor? Will Bollywood and the audience now expect Varun Dhawan to "settle down", just because he got married?
