England ended the day at 96 for 4 in the second innings after a dramatic fourth day at Lord's, and now lead Australia by 104 runs. After making 258 in their first innings, England bowld Australia out for 250, with Steven Smith making 92. The Aussie was retired hurt on 80 after a dangerous Jofra Archer delivery hit him on the head, but he walked back 40 minutes later and got 12 more runs before being sent back by Chris Woakes.

England, in their second innings, after taking a slender 8-run lead, had slumped to 9 for 2 in their second innings as Pat Cummins sent back Jason Roy and Joe Root off consecutive balls. Rory Burns and Joe Denly got together to score 55 runs for the third wicket, before the latter was caught and bowled by Peter Siddle for 26.

Burns battled it out for 29 before he edged a ball, which meant that Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler had to see it through till the end. The duo took England to safety and an interesting fifth day of cricket awaits.

The star of Australia's innings was Smith, who had scored 144 and 142 in Australia's win in the first Test. Here, at Lord's, Smith saw through dangerous spells of fast bowling from Archer, was hit on the arm and the neck but showed great grit to get back on his feet to a thunderous appluase. Once he was dismissed, the English bowlers sent back the Aussie tail in quick succession, with Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins falling quickly.
