England pacer Stuart Broad became the 19th bowler to claim 100 Ashes wickets when he sent back Australia's Steven Smith in the first innings of the first Test on Thursday.

Broad scalped five-wickets in the first innings on Thursday, as he sent back David Warner, Cameron Bancroft, Smith, Tim Paine and James Pattinson.

He ended the innings with figures of 5 for 86, and got to the 100-wicket feat after dismissing Smith.

Former Aussie spin wizard Shane Warne holds the record for most Ashes wickets - 195.

Broad's teammate James Anderson has 104 wickets to his name but he did not get a chance to add to his tally in the first innings at Edgbaston as he got injured after bowling four overs. He had to leave the field and was taken to the hospital for scans.

Australia were all out for 284 in their innings, with Smith leading the way with his 25th ton - a knock of 144.
