Out-of-form Rishabh Pant might not find a place in the starting eleven for the first Test against South Africa at Vizag from October 2. The 21-year-old keeper, who made 4 and 19 in the recently concluded T20I series might not get a further go in the Test series which is also part of the ICC World Test Championship.

According to reliable sources, the talented wicketkeeper batsman might be omitted from the XI for the first Test with Wirddhiman Saha being preferred instead.

"The selectors are in a mood to give one final chance to Pant in the first Test, but the team management (including coach Ravi Shastri and skipper Virat Kohli) wants Saha to play from the start of the series itself."

Ever since, MS Dhoni made himself unavailable for selection in the shorter versions of the game after the ICC World Cup 2019, Pant was appointed as India's first-choice wicketkeeper for all the three formats of the game by chief selector MSK Prasad.

"The problem is, Pant's lack of success with the bat is hurting his confidence while keeping wickets too. His DRS reviews aren't great. In Indian conditions, on turning wickets, he may struggle. Saha is a far better 'keeper than him, and get a few useful runs lower down the order too."

While chief selector MSK Prasad said that one needs to be patient with a talented player like Pant, several experts have felt that it was time for the team management to get away with Pant and try out different players.

MSK Prasad said, "I have already said that post World Cup we have been concentrating on the progress of Rishabh. We need to be patient with him, considering the immense talent that he possesses."
