Impressed with his potential, the Indian cricket team management has called up fast bowler Navdeep Saini as a new bowler for the two Test series against West Indies that begins from Thursday. The move has been made so that the youngster can be groomed for future red-ball assignments.

Saini, who plays for Delhi, made his international debut against West Indies in Florida earlier this month, and won the Man of the Match award in his maiden outing. He had earlier been called as a new bowler for the World Cup 2019 recently as well.

"Yes, Navdeep Saini has been asked to stay back by the team management for the Test series. He will stay back primarily as a net bowler, they want to groom him for the Test format keeping an eye on the future," a senior BCCI official told PTI on Monday.

"Saini has been a performer in red ball cricket for the past few years. He has the pace, and ability to hit the deck, move the ball both in air and off the pitch.

"If he is groomed well, it will only increase our pool of fast bowlers for the top tier cricket. That's how the team management is looking at him," the official said.

The fast bowler has taken 120 wickets in 43 First Class games thus far, and bowling coach Bharat Arun has been drastically impressed with Saini's progression.

"One can't ignore the effort that Arun has put in to mak India's fast bowling unit the best that has emerged from the country. Rather than playing domestic cricket, he now needs to be in and around the international scene and learn the tricks of the trade for the next level," the official said.

India will play five Tests this season at home - three against South Africa and two against Bangladesh - and Saini could make his Test debut against Bangladesh, in a series where Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami could be rested.
