After being reappointed as the Head coach of the Indian Cricket Team, Ravi Shastri identified Shreyas Iyer as the man who could solve India's batting woes at number four. Shastri was chosen over Mike Hesson and Tom Moody by the Cricket Advisory Committee and will continue to serve Indian cricket for another 26 months.

"One of the areas we concentrated on over the last two years was to blood as many youngsters as possible. Shreyas Iyer, for instance, he is going to stay at number four."

Iyer impressed one and all with his performance in the ODI series against West Indies. The Mumbai lad made 71 and 65 in the two ODI outings in the Carribean.

Skipper Virat Kohli also felt the need for Shreyas Iyer to continue batting at number four in the ODI format.

Earlier, Sunil Gavaskar also backed Shreyas Iyer to bat at number four. "In my view, Rishabh Pant is much better like MS Dhoni at number five or six as a finisher because that's where his natural game and natural flair will come into play. If India get to a great start with Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma batting for 40-45 overs, then Pant at number four. But if it's a question of batting 30-35 overs, then I think it should be Shreyas Iyer at number four and Pant at number five."

India's batting woes at number four has been the talk for some time now. The team management has failed to find a suitable batsmen at that position. There was constant chopping and changing throughout the ICC World Cup 2019. The likes of Rishabh Pant and Vijay Shankar have failed to perform to their fullest potential which led to India losing the semifinals against New Zealand.
