Indian cricketer MS Dhoni celebrated India's 73rd Independence Day by visiting the Army hospital in Ladakh and spending some time with the jawans.

The wicket-keeper, who holds the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army reached Ladakh on Wednesday along with other soldiers of the Parachute Regiment - the battalion that he is a part of.

Dhoni spent time with the jawans, with pictures doing the rounds on Twitter.

He is also expected to visit the Siachen base to pay tribute to the martyrs at the Siachen War Memorial.

"Dhoni is a brand ambassador of the Indian Army. He has engaged in motivating members of his unit and has often been playing football and volleyball with the soldiers. He is also undertaking battle training exercises with the corps. He will remain in the valley till August 15," said a senior army official.

The cricketer had taken a two month break from cricket after the end of the World Cup 2019 to fulfil his duties for the Army. He skipped the tour of West Indies, and is likely to complete his stint by Friday. His 15-day stint with the Victor Force in Kashmir was engaged in counter-insurgency operations against militants who are fighting Indian rule in Kashmir.

He was involved in patrolling, guarding and also completed post duty, and his stay in Kashmir was a part of his training.
