Indian cricketer MS Dhoni is likely to hoist the national flag on Independence Day in Leh in the newly-created union territory of Ladakh next week. However, the exact location where he will unfurl the tiranga has not been disclosed.

Dhoni, who is an honorary lieutenant colonel in the Indian Army, is currently stationed at Khrew in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. He is a member of the Territorial Army (Para).

His battalion is deployed in Kashmir, and the current wicket-keeper is stationed in the region since July 30. Sources stated that he is scheduled to travel with his regiment to Leh on August 10.

"Dhoni is a brand ambassador of the Indian Army. He has engaged in motivating members of his unit and has often been playing football and volleyball with the soldiers. He is also undertaking battle training exercises with the corps. He will remain in the valley till August 15," said a senior army officer.

The former skipper took a two-month break from cricket and skipped the tour to West Indies to serve in the Indian Army. Following the loss to New Zealand in the semis of the recent World Cup 2019, Dhoni was expected to announce his retirement from the game, but has delayed the same due to his committments to the Army.

He has been stationed in the Valley despite the increased security build-up in the last few days, which have risen due to the gvernment's decision to abolish Article 370 that had accorded Jammmu and Kashmir with special status.
