Pakistan Cricket Board have kept faith on Sarfaraz Ahmed and retained him as the captain for the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka from September 27 to October 9. Prolific run-getter Babar Azam has been given the additional responsibility of being Sarfaraz Ahmed's deputy. He has previously captained the Pakistan U19s.

A PCB press release also said that it would announce 19 probables for the ODI and T20 series against Sri Lanka on Monday. The 16 player ODI and T20I squads will be named on 23rd September.

PCB chairman Ehsan Mani said, "We have appointed Babar Azam as Sarfaraz's vice-captain. This is part of Babar's gradual development as future captain and in line with our strategy of introducing a succession plan across the board so that there are no gaps. I am hopeful the trio of Misbah, Sarfaraz and Babar will do well for Pakistan Cricket."

Sarfaraz Ahmed felt that he would look to improve upon his leadership qualities under Misbah-ul-Haq.

He said, "I feel humbled and honored to have been awarded extension to my captaincy team. I have enjoyed captaining the Pakistan cricket team and look forward to improve my leadership qualities under the new set-up of Misbah-ul-Haq who also has a proven record as captain."

"I have played most of my cricket under Misbah and we know each other pretty well. I think we will make a good combination, which will contribute to improved performances of the side across all formats."

Pakistan are scheduled to play 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is against Sri Lanka between 27 September and October 9.

Several top Sri Lankan players including the likes of Lasith Malinga and Angelo Matthews have opted out of the series citing security reasons.
