Ahead of the first T20I against South Africa at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala, former India cricketer VVS Laxman has stated that the team management should decide whether Shikhar Dhawan would be in their scheme of things for the T20 World Cup next year.

In a column for Times of India, VVS Laxman wrote, "With the next T20 World Cup a little over a year away, India will have to decide whether Shikhar Dhawan is still the preferred opening partner for Rohit Sharma going forward."

Laxman felt that there are a lot of cricketers who have the capability to take the place of Shikhar Dhawan and form a potent partnership with Rohit Sharma. Dhawan, suffered a thumb injury in the World Cup game against Australia and was ruled out of the tournament. He was replaced by Rishabh Pant. He returned back to international cricket during the West Indies tour and registered scores of 1, 23 and 3 in the three-match T20I series. He did not register significant scores in the ODIs either.

Dhawan however, scored some runs in the one-day games against South Africa A.

"India boast of a powerful and experienced batting line-up which gives them the edge straightaway, and the return of Hardik Pandya adds greater firepower to the batting and balance to the team. While Hardik will slot straightaway into the playing XI, I would also like to see Manish Pandey retain his place to showcase his abilities."

After the three-match T20I series, India will play 3 Test matches starting on October 2
