The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming Test series against South Africa on Thursday. There was no major surprise except the exclusion for KL Rahul who was dropped from the team following some poor performance with the bat and was replaced by youngster Shubman Gill.

Rahul scored 101 runs from two matches in the last series against West Indies and Indian cricket team chief selector MSK Prasad revealed after the team selection the Rohit Sharma will be opening the batting along with Mayank Agarwal against South Africa.

“Rohit Sharma has been selected in the side as an opener. He will open in the three matches and also for the Board President XI. Want to give him an opportunity to open the innings in Tests,” Prasad said in the press conference.

Earlier, Rohit found support from a number of former cricketers who believe that he can succeed as an opener in Test cricket. “There is no reason why Rohit Sharma cannot be successful in Test cricket. In India, most definitely he can play as an opener. There might be more challenging times abroad in South Africa, England and Australia,” said former Australia wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist while responding to the topic.

Rohit, who had a great run in the World Cup 2019 as he slammed five hundreds, was in the squad for the West Indies Tests but was not included in the playing XI. Former captain Sourav Ganguly has also backed Rohit for the Test opener's role and said that the star batsman deserved an opportunity in the longest format of the game.

India are set to play three Tests against South Africa. The first match will be played in Vizag, second in Pune and third in Ranchi. The three-match Test series will begin after the culmination of three-match T20I series.
