The PlayStation 5 has received its first 8K game; however, the console does not currently support that resolution; but even so, Sony is working on full 8K support for a future update. ‘The Touryst’, a popular Switch indie game, will be the first console game to support 8K resolution at the frame rate of 60 frames per second (fps) on PlayStation 5 consoles.

The Nintendo Switch version of this work came out in 2019, and the PC/Xbox Series X | The S/Xbox One version came out the year before. and in September this year, it made its way to Sony Playstation consoles. For now, the game is rendering internally at native 8K and using supersampling with a resolution of 7680x4320. The game was developed by Shin’em Multimedia. Tourists travel to tropical destinations to enjoy their vacation in "The Touryst," an action-adventure game. Swimming in the ocean, shopping, or playing video games in the arcade is all options. However, there is a tale that this island contains a secret old structure, and players will attempt to uncover the underground mines.

How ‘The Touryst’ works on 8K resolution?

Shin’en Multimedia is using the super-sampling technique to downsample every pixel on any connected 4K TV, resulting in an apparent 8K output, according to Digital Foundry’s report. The output over HDMI 2.1 is not supported by the PS5. If Sony ever enabled 8K output on a PS5, the developer promised to release a patch that would allow ‘The Touryst’ to display without downsampling on an 8K TV. Anti-aliasing is currently applied to the higher resolution data, making the game's lines appear smoother and more realistic. The Touryst's voxel-based 3D look isn't very demanding, which means there's plenty of opportunity for pushing super high resolutions at high frame rates.

Despite having an 8K symbol on the front of the box, the PS5 does not presently support 8K output for games. Although the PS5 promises to be able to output up to 8K resolution, it is currently only capable of 4K output. Official 8K output compatibility will be included in a future system software upgrade, according to SIE. There aren't many 8K-compatible TVs on the market, and the setting in which you can properly appreciate 8K pictures doesn't yet exist. However, because it's drawn in 8K internally, super-sampling allows for smoother drawing when output in 4K or 1080p. You can still enjoy the full benefits if you don't have an 8K TV. The Xbox Series X version of the game, which renders in 6K, is the same.
