Canon Announces New Dual Fisheye Lens with f/2.8 Aperture and a New EOS VR System; Read More
Canon has announced, the EOS VR System a new virtual reality (VR) video production system. The EOS VR system includes a dedicated lens dubbed as RF5.2mm f/2.8 Dual Fisheye lens to achieve 3D 180-degree VR images in high quality and two software named EOS VR Utility and EOS VR Plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro.
Canon is known for introducing new and innovative products to the market and surprising customers. Moving forward in that direction Canon has launched, the EOS VR System a new virtual reality (VR) video production system. The EOS VR system includes a dedicated lens dubbed as RF5.2mm f/2.8 Dual Fisheye lens to achieve 3D 180-degree VR images in high quality and two software named EOS VR Utility and EOS VR Plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro to process the VR image and footage.
The New RF5.2mm f/2.8 Dual Fisheye lens
The new RF5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye lens is a dedicated RF lens equipped with two fisheye lenses, which produce a parallax effect that can be used to create 3D 180-degree VR images. The company claims it to be “the world’s first digital interchangeable lens that can capture stereoscopic 3D 180° VR imagery to a single image sensor.” Canon is leveraging its optical technologies developed through the development and production of the EOS interchangeable lens camera system to create a new VR video production system that produces high-quality images while streamlining the production process.
According to Mr. C Sukumaran, Director-Consumer Systems Products and Imaging Communication Business, “The EOS VR System has been developed by nurturing Canon’s optical technologies and EOS interchangeable lens camera system. It promises high-quality images coupled with an efficient production workflow. When attached to the EOS R5, the new RF5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye lens will enable users to harness the camera’s ultra-high definition 8K recording capabilities and produce an immersive feel like never experienced before.”
Features of Canon RF5.2mm f/2.8 Dual Fisheye Lens
The new offering by Canon comes with a boatload of new technologies and enables the user to capture 180-degree VR footage in 3D using the parallax between left and right images. The 180-degree VR footage field of view minimizes the amount of data collected and results in more manageable high-definition film, which is ideal for making extremely realistic visuals. Camera operators can concentrate on their work knowing that they will not be captured in the frame.
The RF5.2mm f/2.8 Dual Fisheye Lens features an ND filter holder that allows shooting in bright conditions. It also features two UD lens elements in each fisheye lens which combines with RF mount’s short back focus mechanism to obtain high image quality. With a 60mm base length, the lens arrangement also optimizes light ray bending, resulting in a realistic parallax effect. An Electromagnetic Diaphragm (EMD) adjusts the aperture diameter electronically in both the left and right lenses. The lens has a gelatin filter holder that allows you to use an ND filter. Users can capture high-resolution VR format with dynamic range with this lens. The lens' large f/2.8 maximum aperture, combined with the EOS R5's highly sensitive CMOS image sensor and DIGIC X image processor's powerful noise processing capabilities, results in high-quality footage even in low-light situations or scenes where light is intentionally reduced for creative expression. The RF5.2mm f/2.8 Dual Fisheye Lens is currently compatible with Canon EOS R5.
EOS VR Utility
The EOS VR Utility will be a subscription-based tool that allows users to convert pictures into standard VR formats such as equirectangular projections. The software allows the user to perform basic editing and switch between images or footage captured with left and right lenses. The user will also be able to switch from a circular fisheye to an equirectangular display using the software. It also offers image straightening/parallax correction for compatible lenses, as well as 180-degree VR image playback and basic cutting on computer monitors. Videos shot in 8K can be converted and saved in a variety of sizes, file types, and formats.
EOS VR Plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro
As the name implies, this plugin software will assist video editors in using Adobe Premiere Pro to edit their videos. The editors can change the photos to equirectangular projections by swapping the left and right images.
Price and Availability
The EOS VR System will be available in the market by the end of December 2021. The RF5.2mm f/2.8 Dual Fisheye lens costs Rs 179,999, while both software programs will require a paid subscription.
