Samsung will supply camera modules for the Cybertruck; signs half a billion-dollar deal with Tesla

Samsung has reportedly signed a deal with the popular electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla worth nearly half a billion dollars. As part of the deal, the South Korean tech giant will be providing camera modules for Tesla’s upcoming Cybertruck electric vehicle, which was introduced in 2019. As the Korea Economic Daily reports, Samsung’s Electro-Mechanics subsidiary has won a contract worth $436 million from the largest EV manufacturer in America for the Cybertruck deal. The source has also mentioned that the Cybertruck is loaded with an extensive suite of cameras.

Cybertruck’s cameras will be supplied by Samsung’s Electro-Mechanics

For the uninitiated, the Tesla Cybertruck is a futuristic-looking electric pickup. The electric vehicle doesn’t have side mirrors and instead relies on rear-view cameras, which are placed in the fenders. The feed from these cameras is streamed on the display inside the cabin. In addition, the electric vehicle is packed with over eight cameras, which will enable self-driving functionality. So it appears to be a huge deal for Samsung to provide camera modules for the Cybertruck.

“Samsung Electro-Mechanics was known to have won a $435.7 million deal to supply camera modules to the largest US EV maker. The company plans to launch a new EV, which gives drivers a rear view through a camera equipped on the car, as the model does not have side mirrors. The EV has more than eight cameras for self-driving purposes”, added the report by the Korea Economic Daily.

Samsung ISOCELL Auto 4AC sensor could be used on the Cybertruck

It’s worth mentioning that Samsung has just introduced its first ISOCELL Image Sensor tailored for automotive applications earlier today. Dubbed the Samsung ISOCELL Auto 4AC, the new sensor could be seen in the Tesla Cybertruck as well as in Tesla’s upcoming electric vehicles as well. The new sensor has the brand’s CornerPixel solution, which is capable of enhancing the field of view for an even safer driving experience. This sensor is intended to be used as a reverse camera to stream on surround view monitors.

“The new ISOCELL Auto 4AC combines Samsung’s innovative and market-proven image sensor technologies with a unique CornerPixel solution for advanced HDR and LFM capabilities, offering exceptional viewing experiences regardless of lighting conditions,” said Duckhyun Chang, executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics. “Starting with the ISOCELL Auto 4AC, we plan to expand our automotive sensor lineup to areas such as camera monitor systems (CMS), autonomous driving and in-cabin monitoring.”

Notably, this is not the first time Samsung and Tesla are working together. The South Korean tech giant has already been supplying Tesla with components for its electric cars. These techs include batteries, apart from some other components.
