Rama Navami is one of the important festivals in India and the same is being celebrated today, i.e. on April 13. The festival is celebrated on the ninth day of Shukla Paksha (or bright phase of the lunar fortnight) in the month of Chaitra (mid-March). It also marks the last day of Chaitra Navaratri. The festival is also known as Chaitra Masa Suklapaksha Navami.

The Hindus across the world celebrate the pious day with rituals and prayers. For the unversed, the day marks the birth of Lord Rama, who was the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He was born in Ayodhya to Queen Kaushalya and King Dasharath during Treta Yug. In Ayodhya, especially, the festival is celebrated with great pomp and zeal. Every year, grand processions and celebrations are conducted.

On this day, devotees place the idol of Rama in a cradle and prayers and mantras are chanted. Community meals and cultural events are also held. The day is remembered for Lord Rama’s prosperous reign as the king as well. One of the main attractions of the day is the Rathyatra. Devotees decorate the chariots in which people enact the divine olden times of Rama. The chariot processions are also known as shobha yatras of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman.

On this auspicious day, devotees take a dip in the holy river of Sarayu. Many even perform Kalyanotsavam (marriage) with deities of Rama and Sita in their homes.
