Date:

Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi is celebrated on the full moon Shravan Purnima day and therefore, the festival is also called as Rakhi Poornima. This year, the day falls on 15th August which coincides with Independence day in India.

Significance & Importance:

This auspicious day is celebrated to highlight the bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, a sister ties ‘Rakhi’ around her brother’s wrist while the brother undertakes an oath to protect his sister until death. This protecting is known as ‘Raksha’ as on the other hand,  sisters tie the sacred thread around the wrists of brothers is a symbol of attachment, meant to strengthen their bond of love.

In today's scenario, this day has a different perspective.

The occasion involves a pledge of life-time practise of moral, cultural and spiritual values. While it is not the same as it was centuries ago, brothers and sisters still try to instil the value and culture in today’s scenario.

Since it is one of the most auspicious days, the preparations for Raksha Bandhan in each Hindu household begins way before the festival month arrives. Choosing and buying selective ‘Rakhi’ for her brother, we see every sister overwhelmed with joy on this occasion. Sweets are prepared the night before the celebration. It is a day where families come together and bond. The day, ultimately, stands for love and compassion between brothers and sisters.
