The holy month of Shravan or Sawan has begun. The month is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is celebrated in full spirit. Hands down, it has to be one of the holiest months in the Hindu calendar. Shravan is the fifth month in the Hindu calendar and the Shivalinga is offered water for prayers.

Shivratri this year will fall on July 30th. Mondays are extremely important in this specific month as it is the special day of Shiva. July 22, July 29, August 5 and August 12 are the 4 Mondays that’ll fall in this month. The holy celebrations of Naag Panchami and Raksha Bandhan will also fall in this month.

What is so special about Sawan?

The month of Sawan is extremely important for the Hindus. It is believed according to ancient tales that it was during this time that Lord Shiva got impressed by the asperity of Parvati. It is only after that, that he chose her as his wife. Many devotees also believe that Lord Shiva blesses and fulfills all the wishes of his “bhakts”. The blessings also include a good partner for the women who fast for the Lord.

Kanwar Yatra

It is during this time that his devotees come together for the “Kanwar Yatra”.They are all clad in saffron - Lord Shiva’s holy colour and gather around in Haridwar. They reach the sacred spot and celebrate the spirit by taking a dip in the divine river Ganga. They then carry the holy water and offer it to the Shivalinga in the temple.

There are however, some important rules that one must follow during this month.

1. Fasting is extremely important during Sawan. You must also offer milk, ganga jal, curd, ghee and honey - together known as “Panchamrut” along with Bilva leaves to the Lord.

2. It is believed that if an unmarried woman fasts during this month then she’ll be blessed with a really good husband.

3. Chanting the Shiva mantra during this period is also a good thing to do.

4. Listening to or chanting the Maha Mrutyunjay chant also brings in prosperity.

5. Following one single meal during the day followed by eating the prasad offered to the Lord in the night will also be meritorious.

6. Wearing the Rudraksh chain during this period is also considered beneficial.

You should avoid speaking anything even remotely negative during this period. Mediation, eating vegetarian food is also encouraged during this period. Make sure you’re visiting the Shiva temple to offer your prayers. One should also not shave or cut their hair during this period. Make sure you don’t fast half-heartedly. Also, you should definitely see if your body allows you to fast for long if not then do not let anything toss your health.

While we can do and follow all of the above mentioned pointers, but if we are not good human beings then not even God can help us. The sacred month will come to an end on August 12. So be a good person, help the poor or the ones in need and the Almighty will definitely bless you.
