It was during the warm-up match before the commencement of the World Cup 2019 tournament when this batsman suffered from a knee injury. However, he went on to play the first two matches for the team in the tournament. This injury will raise numerous concerns in the team as Shahzad’s form post 2015 World Cup has been tremendous. However, in the on-going World Cup tournament, he has been struggling with his batting and couldn’t get past 7 runs in both the matches. Against Australia, he was bowled by Mitchell Starc on a duck, whereas he managed to score only 7 runs off 12 deliveries against the Lankans.

In the absence of their opening batsman, 18-year-old Ikram Ali Khil will serve the team as his replacement. Ikram made his ODI debut 2 months before the commencement of the World Cup. He played his first ODI match against Ireland on March 2, 2019.

As far as Afghanistan cricket is concerned, it would be extremely important for the team to make a strong comeback in order to keep their hopes alive in the tournament. Afghanistan has lost both their previous matches in the tournament. They lost to the defending champions, Australia by a huge margin of 7 wickets and against Sri Lanka by 34 runs.

Afghanistan will play its next match against New Zealand tomorrow, i.e. June 8 at County ground, Taunton.
