From starting at refugee camps to making it to the World Cup, Afghanistan’s cricket journey is an inspiration for every cricket playing nation. The side has produced some world class cricketers in a short span of time. The emergence of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Mujeeb Ur Rehman is an example of the enormous talent that Afghanistan carries.

Currently ranked at number 10 in ODI team rankings, Afghanistan will be a team that every opposition would take more than seriously in the upcoming World Cup. They have some exceptional players in the squad, who can upset any opposition on a given day. The Gulbadin Naib-led team has won 4 ODI series while drawn 2 in the last six assignments, which largely defines the success Afghanistan has tasted during recent times.

The team did exceedingly well in the 2018 Asia Cup as well. Before heading to the World Cup, their players were busy with several mega cricket leagues around the world. Playing in various conditions with the world’s best cricketers is surely going to benefit them in the tournament. Meanwhile, Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced a spin-heavy squad for the World Cup. With pitches expected to offer some turn as the tournament goes on, the likes of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Mujeeb, who are currently counted among the best white-ball spinners can wreak havoc.

Pertinently, in the seam bowling department, they have a few good seamers as well. However, it is the batting that looks quite slim on paper. They lack the depth as well as a good combination in the middle-order. Though the experience of Asghar Afghan, Mohammad Shahzad and the freshness of Hazratullah Zazai can help them to get rid of this weakness, as Afghanistan goes deep in the tournament. This young-experience mingled team can undoubtedly pull off some miracles, given they play to their potential.
