Indian actor, philanthropist, Farooq Sheikh was born on 25th March, 1948, in Gujarat to Mustafa and Farida Sheikh. His father was a lawyer, whereas his mother was a housewife. Farooq Sheikh was the eldest of five children and grew up in luxurious surroundings in Bombay. He did his schooling at St. Mary's School and later graduated from St Xavier's College. Having thought of taking law as a career, he took admission to the Siddharth College of Law. Later, he ventured into theatre and started working in stage plays. During his early days, he was very active in theatre and used to do work with several well-known directors and groups. When he was in his last year of college, he was called by director MS Sathyu for the film, Garam Hawa which was released in 1973. This came as one of his first major roles. However, he gained recognition during his participation in television shows like Yuvadarshan and Young World, which made him a household name. Next, he was seen in films like Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Noorie, Chashme Buddoor, Saath Saath, Kissi Se Na Kehna, Ek Baar Chale Aao, Salma, Biwi Ho To Aisi, Maya Memsaab, and so on. During this time, he worked with actress Deepti Naval in several films and they were a successful pair. Apart from Deepti Naval, he was also cast opposite actress Shabana Azmi in several films and had good chemistry with her. Later in the 1990s, he did fewer movies and moved to television serials. Some of his last films were Saas Bahu Aur Sensex, Lahore, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, and Club 60. Apart from his acting career, Farooq Sheikh has also been a philanthropist and made an immense contribution to UNICEF's polio eradication programme. He has worked with several program teams in getting close to the communities. Talking about his personal life, he married his college classmate Roopa whom he met at St Xavier's. The two worked actively in theatre and later got married after dating for 9 years. They have two daughters. Unfortunately in the year 2013, he passed away after a heart attack in Dubai.
