5 Things every teenager should know about their skincare routine

First, let's normalise the beautiful changes the human body undergoes both internally & externally when one is growing up.

It's likely to take things for granted when you are healthy, young, wild & robust but what you may be unaware of as a teenager is that the kind of hustle you're engaging in, may wreak havoc on your skin which shows up in your 30s. Taking care of your skin today requires education & appropriate investment to keep it healthy, zesty & in the very best of conditions down the road. Teenage gets over real fast, your investment will pay off in the years to come.

All you need is a routine & rhythm that creates balance among your Doshas (bio-energetic forces) - Vata, Pitta & Kapha, that determine your Skin & Hair types. Ayurveda honours & celebrates our individuality and uniqueness, and each of us has a unique combination of Doshas which may change owing to various internal & external factors like food, environment, stage of life, etc.

Read on to uncover some of the most common skin issues and few simple techniques at your rescue:

Pimples:

One may experience breakouts & acne, which can be emotionally challenging to deal with at times, as you're already experiencing a sea of changes. Potential reasons could be clogged pores, genetics, changing hormone level & stress.

What to do:

Wash your face using a mild cleanser, in the morning and before bed. Mix Tea Tree Essential Oil & drinking water in 1:4 and use it as a toner. Use an oil-balancing/ hydrating face cream/ serum. Face packs & masks should be limited to up to twice a week only, once a week, if at all.

Myth: Oils shouldn't be applied on Oily Skin

Tip: Your skin might be releasing extra oil because you might be trying to rip it off its natural moisture, you are scaring your skin. Ingredients like Tea Tree Oil, Cinnamon Oil, Magnolia Bark Extract, Neem Oil, Tulsi, etc. can be mixed with Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and dabbed in a small amount on the face at night. This concoction will help in balancing sebum production.

Dandruff:

Caused due to various reasons like excessive oil in the hair follicles, cold & dry weather, stress, or not cleansing your hair enough or reaction to certain hair products can also result in dry or greasy flakes with or without itching. In sporadic cases, dandruff can cause hair loss if it isn't treated.

What to do:

Use a good hair oil, my secret recipe is - Coconut Oil mixed with Neem Oil & Camphor, it smells therapeutic and is terrific to treat dandruff.

Facial Hair Problem:

Unwanted facial hair in teenage girls occurs due to hormonal changes during puberty when your body produces androgens (male hormones), genetic structuring, or side-effects of certain drugs.

What to do:

Most of the times, this is triggered by PCOD, so it's pertinent to keep your lifestyle in check. Tea Tree & Lavender Essential Oils mixed with Coconut Oil can be used at night. There are more long term solutions in Ayurveda like Thanaka Powder which can be used to permanently reduce facial hair.

Air Pollution & Sunburn:

The quality of the air we breathe and live in also plays a role in how our skin turns out to be. Since the skin is gentle, over-exposure to the sun may cause irritation and sunburn.

What to do

Wear a sunscreen before stepping out. To remove tan, use coconut oil or almond oil mixed with lemon juice in 1:20 and wash off post an hour, can also be used overnight. If there’s sunburn, use coconut oil would soothe and calm the skin.
