Badhaai Do revolves around a couple who are both secretly gay and decide to enter into a fake marriage to appease their families. Shardul Thakur, played by Rajkummar Rao, is a cop living with his traditional family in Dehradun. Despite being 32 years old, he has not come out to his family and they are pressuring him to get married. Similarly, Suman Singh, played by Bhumi Pednekar, is a physical education teacher who is also a closeted lesbian. Her family is also urging her to settle down, so she turns to dating apps to find a suitable partner. She meets someone named Raju online and they arrange to meet in person at a café. However, she is shocked to discover that Raju is a man posing as a woman. A man named Rajeev, played by Vyom Yadav, learns where Suman, played by Bhumi Pednekar, lives and where her father, played by Nitesh Pandey, has a shop. He then proceeds to blackmail her and demands sexual favors from her, threatening to expose her secret if she doesn't comply. Suman goes to the police and Shardul, played by Rajkummar Rao, takes her complaint and gets Rajeev arrested. However, during the interrogation, Rajeev reveals to Shardul that Suman is not straight. Shardul, who is of the same caste as Suman, meets with her and proposes that they get married so they can live together as roommates and have the freedom to live their lives as they want. Suman agrees and they enter into a lavender marriage. However, a year after their marriage, Shardul's family begins pressuring them to have a baby. Shardul is in a rocky relationship with an MBA student named Kabir, played by Deepak Arora. Meanwhile, Suman, played by Bhumi Pednekar, meets and starts a secret affair with Rimjhim Jongkey, played by Chum Darang, who works at a pathology lab. Rimjhim eventually moves in with Shardul and Suman, but Shardul becomes worried about their living arrangement since they reside in police quarters where their conservative cop neighbors might not accept their lifestyle. The events that follow this development make up the rest of the film's story.
