Dharamdev Pishorimal Anand or famously known as Dev Anand was an Indian film actor, writer, director and producer. He was primarily known for working in Hindi films. His career spanned over six decades and he was one of the best and successful actors in the Indian film industry. Dev Anand was born on 26th September 1923 in Punjab to Pishori Lal Anand. Anand did his schooling in Punjab and later went to Government College in Dharamshala before leaving for Lahore. After that, he completed a B.A. degree in English Literature from the Government College in Lahore. After completing his graduation, he came to Bombay to pursue his career. He started working in the military censor's office where he received Rs 65 as salary. Later, he joined his older brother and aspired to become a performer. Soon he got a lead role in the film Hum Ek Hain. He was seen opposite Kamala Kotnis. During that time, he befriended actor Guru Dutt. Thereafter, he worked in films like Vidya, Jeet, Shair, Afsar, Do Sitare and Sanam with Guru Dutt, all of which were successful at the box office. Later, he got his first major break due to Ashok Kumar with the film Ziddi. The film was a big success and at that moment, Anand decided to start producing films. In 1949, he launched his own company, Navketan Films and produced 35 films under it. Dev Anand also took along his close friend Guru Dutt in many of his projects. Some of the notable works of his career include Baazi, Pocket Maar, Kala Bazar, Tere Ghar Ke Samne, Maya, Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai, Guide, Jewel Thief, Prem Pujari, etc. He was called an evergreen hero for his signature style of acting and romance. In his overall career, he has produced 35 films and directed 19 films. Talking about his personal life, reportedly, Dev Anand had an affair with actress Suraiya in the 1950s but never got married. However, in 1954, he got married to Kalpana Kartik, an actress and had two children, son Suneil and daughter Devina. In 2011, he passed away at the age of 88 in London due to cardiac arrest. His death came two months after the release of his last film titled Chargesheet, which was directed and produced by him.
