The United Kingdom and the other 14 Commonwealth nations are ruled by Charles III. Charles was three years old when his mother, Elizabeth II, assassinated the throne in 1952, making him the heir apparent. Charles was born in Buckingham Palace during the reign of his maternal grandfather, George VI. His investiture took place in 1969 after he was made Prince of Wales in 1958. Like his father, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, he had his education at Cheam and Gordonstoun schools. He then spent six months at the Timbertop campus of Geelong Grammar School in Victoria, Australia. Charles joined the Royal Air Force and Navy in 1971 after graduating from the University of Cambridge with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He served in these organisations for five years.
