Last week, international celebrity, Selena Gomez, claimed that social media had a terrible impact on her generation. In India, Jacqueline Fernandez, who also has a massive following on social media, echoed similar views. With over 28 million followers on Instagram, Jacqueline expressed that while it has been a blessing to have a strong social media following, it does come at a cost. Elaborating on her experience, she said, “Honestly, I feel blessed that I have so many followers. It’s also been a lot of hard work, and I feel people forget to talk about it. Maintaining social media now as part of your professional life is not an easy job.”

It’s not effortless anymore, she claims. “People have those numbers as they work towards it. It doesn’t happen naturally. It’s an added effort; and not an easy one to make. To keep updating your fans, and continue to be active on social media. To create and publish content. It is time and energy consuming.”

The actress confesses that the presence on social media, along with the constant criticism and judgement, has now become an essential aspect of being a celebrity. “It has become a huge facet today. So much so that if we don’t have a good following, it is taken as a factor to judge one’s success. It’s sad because it’s becoming more of a race and competition who has more following and engagement,” she says.

“Sometimes I wish I could turn back time. When Instagram first started, I would post pictures about beautiful things and quotes which inspire me. Now, we (celebrities) have to evaluate how many likes or engagement will a picture get; or will it go viral. If it won’t, then we don’t put it up. Suddenly I feel someone just compromised the platform which initially I feel was created for exposing people to just beautiful pictures,” Jacqueline adds.

At the same time, she does give social media credit for bringing celebrities closer to the public. “It is still a great way to connect with fans. It would have never been possible a couple of years back. During my initial days in the Bollywood industry, people could only fall back on my films. Instagram opened the door for me to connect with people who actually know who I am, and it really helped me in the industry,” she concludes.

Jacqueline has recently set a new trend by becoming one of the first commercially successful actresses to debut on OTT. She is currently working on a digital film project, ‘Mrs. Serial Killer’, where she has taken the risk of playing the role of a serial killer for the first time.
