EXCLUSIVE: Amit Sharma on board as director on Deepika Padukone’s The Intern, filming begins in November

Deepika Padukone is easily the busiest actors of Bollywood today with back-to-back film shoots lined up. After completing Shakun Batra’s yet untitled domestic noir, the actress switched her base to Siddharth Anand’s action thriller, Pathan with Shah Rukh Khan and John Abraham. As the shoot wraps up around the month of June, she moves onto Nag Ashwin’s futuristic sci-fi film co-starring Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan and Pinkvilla recently reported how the actress has allotted 75 days to can her scenes in this ambitious project. And now, we have got another update on DP’s next.

A source exclusively tells Pinkvilla that Deepika has locked the director for the Hindi adaptation of Hollywood classic, The Intern. “They were contemplating on multiple names, but finally, zeroed in on Amit Sharma as the director. Sharma in the past has helmed Badhai Ho and is currently on the verge of completing the Ajay Devgn fronted sport biopic, Maidaan. The team of The Intern unanimously felt that Amit is the best choice for the film and the director too is in sync with the vision to bring the classic to India. In-fact, he has already prepared a draft for his adaptation and will develop it further once Maidaan is wrapped up in a fortnight,” revealed a source close to the development. While Badhai Ho was a sleeper hit at the box-office, winning over acclaim for audience and critics alike, Maidaan is carrying extraordinary pre-release reports and if the buzz in industry is anything to go by, one can expect to be another winner for Sharma.

The Intern is targeting to go on the floors around the month of November. By then, Deepika would have wrapped up her existing commitments, whereas Amit too will be done with the release of Maidaan in the month of October. The casting is underway, and we have heard that the makers will lock the names by this summer and then make a formal announcement. Big wigs of industry are in advanced talks to step into Robert De Niro’s shoes from the original.  The Hindi adaptation is being produced by Sunir Kheterpal with Deepika Padukone and the international giant, Warner Brothers is on board as the presenter.

Meanwhile, DP’s next with Shakun Batra is currently in the post production stage and is gearing up for a release in the theatres this year. A source confirms that the team of this Karan Johar production is targeting an opening in the vicinity of August to October, and also have a tentative date in place. There is also a possibility of the actor squeezing in a quick in between her already confirmed projects, but there’s nothing concrete on that front at the moment. Stay tuned for more updates on Deepika, exclusively on Pinkvilla.
