EXCLUSIVE: Madhur Bhandarkar on Kangana Ranaut’s leaked Manikarnika video: No way to mock a talented actress

One of the first blockbuster films of 2019 was Kangana Ranaut’s directorial debut, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. The actor who stepped into the shoes of a director for this epic film managed to wow the audience with her brave and valiant avatar of Rani Laxmibai. Her performance in the film as the fierce freedom fighter left a lasting impression on everyone who saw it. However, despite the box office numbers and the appreciation from the audiences, some people took to social media to attack the talented actress.

Recently, a video of Kangana Ranaut was leaked online from Manikarnika where she was seen riding a mechanical horse for a shot in the film. Post that people started attacking her on social media and questioned her acting ability. Now, speaking to Pinkvilla exclusively, Madhur Bhandarkar, who has worked with Kangana in Fashion, took a strong stand against the trolls and extended support to Kangana. On being asked about his stance on the video, Madhur expressed his view that attacking Kangana on social media this way wasn’t right.

He said, “I think this is absolutely a non-issue for this kind of thing getting leaked on the social media. Because every actor, they do special effects or they have stunt duplicate which can be used. It is not from now. It is being done from ages. It is not only in India but all over the world. There are a lot of technicalities involved in it. People only see from the point of view ke ek Video Leak hua hai. But you have to see the holistic way and whole perspective that why these kinds of things happen. Kangana definitely has rode the horse in the film. But there are close up shots and you have to take care of that and shoot in that manner also. People don’t understand technicalities about it. There is nothing to mock about it.”

Madhur questioned the so-called people who talk about women empowerment and mentioned that this was no way to mock a talented actor like Kangana who has managed to carry the film on her shoulders alone. He said, “A lot of people talk about women empowerment, but this is not a way to mock an actress. She is a talented actress and she has carried a film on her shoulders on her own. The film has been appreciated a lot and then suddenly a video comes and people start mocking on social media. I personally feel there is no issue to it. Because this doing stunts or doing close up shots on dummy horse and more are used in a lot of films across all Hollywood as well like Lord of the rings and whatever films have been made there also. Sometimes these things come out as they are not in the public domain so people don’t understand.”

Madhur even was left baffled that people had forgotten Kangana’s video of practising horse riding at Mahalaxmi Racecourse in the wake of the 1-minute video. He said, “Second thing that comes to mind that we have seen the same video where she is seen practising horse riding on Mahalaxmi race course no one is talking about that. It’s not that an entire video is shot on dummy horse. These kinds of things we do a lot. Green Screen we use. We show London and we are doing a green screen in Mehboob studios. Many times it happens. If we show the green screen, people will say aapne toh london dikhaya aapne toh, brooklyn bridge dikhaya america ka. That video if leaked, people will mock. This is an example. There are actors who do their own stunts. Kangana must have done her stunts in the film. There are certain shots where you only need a dummy horse to take care. Sometimes we create a dummy dog, dummy snake in the film. Horse get tired so, we require those sort of things and we have to take care of animal safety also.”

Finally, he mentioned that in the video, a close-up shot or other technicalities might have been involved and thus, Kangana was seen on a mechanical horse. However, he clarified that the entire film surely wasn’t shot this way and that people need to look at the whole picture before mocking Kangana. He said, “People have to look at the holistic manner and totality. Not by a 1-minute video got leaked and people start mocking. It’s very easy due to social media is there. People should appreciate the talent, the skill with which she has done the things. We should not make a mockery of the things by demeaning and discourage somebody by 1-minute video of it. People should see a larger perspective and they should not see just 1-minute of things.”
