EXCLUSIVE: Subhash Ghai on reuniting with Anil Kapoor, Madhuri & Jackie: It has nothing to do with Ram Lakhan

Subhash Ghai has directed classics like Karz, Saudagar and Khalnayak among many others. These films are extremely popular among the masses even today and every now and then we hear rumours of several filmmakers wanting to remake some of his films. One such popular movie helmed by Ghai is Ram Lakhan, which completed 32 years on January 27. Featuring Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Dimple Kapadia and Madhuri Dixit in the lead, Ram Lakhan was the second highest grossing film in 1989.

On its 32nd anniversary, Madhuri Dixit shared a ‘then and now’ picture of the Ram Lakhan team. She captioned the picture as “Celebrating #32YearsOfRamLakhan & the wonderful memories we made while working on the film. Thank you for watching, enjoying & loving the hard work of the entire team.” This snap led to speculations that the cast had recently reunited to celebrate the milestone, however while speaking to Pinkvilla Ghai clarified that the said picture was clicked a few years ago at his residence.

“One day we just thought that we have not met for a while, so all of us met together. But you know when you call it a reunion it means that we had departed somewhere. However, we never departed, so there is no question of a reunion. The only thing is that we were all working on different projects, so we did not happen to meet for a long time,” reminisces Ghai adding that this year he spoke to his Ram Lakhan team on the phone.

“I spoke to Jackie, Madhuri, Anil and Anupam (Kher). We are all matured now. That time we were 30 plus and now we are 60 plus. The actors and I shared a very fun equation. I used to write dialogues on the set and I remember Anupam, Satish (Kaushik) and Anil would sit in some corner wondering who would get the dialogues today. They would speak stuff like ‘Maine Saab ko khush kar diya tera kuch nai hone wala, aaj mere ko dialogue milne wala hai’ (I have impressed sir today, but nothing much is going to happen for you. I am going to get dialogues today),” laughs Ghai adding that Ram Lakhan was made out of happiness.

Is there a chance we will get to see him reunite with Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit for the big screen and he answers in affirmative. “I have been toying with an idea for the last two years which I have also been writing. It’s called Ramchand Kishanchand. The story is different and has nothing to do with Ram Lakhan, but revolves around two cops - one good and one bad. They share a love and hate relationship and come from different states. The relationship between them is just fantastic and it will be the same chemistry that you expect from Ram Lakhan. I have discussed this project with Anil and Jackie and they are very keen about it.” says Ghai.

Prod him if Madhuri too will be a part of the project and he says, “She should be there. Ramchand Kishanchand will have the same kind of energy, fun and emotions.” He adds that the film is currently in the scripting stage and will decide on the shooting dates only after completing the script.

Meanwhile, is there an update on the Ram Lakhan remake that was announced a few years ago? “We have given the remake rights to Karan Johar 5 years back. We are still waiting to see if they are making it or not” the filmmaker signs off.
