Actress Manisha Koirala was born on 16th August 1970 in Kathmandu, Nepal to her father Prakash Koirala who is a politician and former minister of environment, and mother Sushma Koirala, a homemaker. She also has a brother Siddharth Koirala, who is also an actor. She comes from a family of politicians. Manisha spent her early life in India and it was during this time when she did her schooling. Later, she developed an interest in modelling and also did few modelling assignments. Focusing on becoming an actor, Koirala decided to move to Mumbai for pursuing a career in acting. Later, she made her Bollywood debut with Saudagar (1991) which was a commercial hit. Next, she was seen in the film Yalgaar (1992). Also, it was a box office hit. Over the next few years, her career didn't go well and she was struggling to give good films. Later in 1994, she featured in 1942: A Love Story which gained her recognition. She also won her first nomination for Best Actress at Filmfare Awards. Later, she made her debut in the Tamil film industry with the film Bombay (1995). She also won the Filmfare Award for Best Tamil Actress. Later, she was again seen in the Bollywood film, Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995) opposite actor Aamir Khan. The film was one of the biggest hits of the year. In the following year, she was seen in films like Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), Dil Se (1998), Mann (1999), Grahan (2001), Lajja (2001), Company (2002), Ek Chhotisi Love Story (2002), Paisa Vasool (2004), and so on. Also, she made her debut in the Bengali film industry with Khela (2008) opposite Prosenjit and Raima Sen. Despite doing some relevant Bollywood films, Manisha Koirala was known more as a South Indian actress. She gave some of the biggest hits in the South Indian film industry. In 2004, she moved to New York City and did a diploma in filmmaking from the New York University. It was then when she produced her first film Paisa Vasool. Other than that, Manisha Koirala has also been a part of the television industry where she hosted the TV show Sawaal Dus Crore Ka on Zee TV. Manisha Koirala is actively associated with social work and has been a0 0part of several organisations for promoting women empowerment, prevention of violence against women, prevention of human trafficking, and so on. She was also appointed as a UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador for India. In the year 2012, it was reported that Manisha Koirala was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. However, she went to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in the US and underwent treatment for her condition. Talking about her personal life, Koirala got engaged to former Australian ambassador to Nepal, Christine Conroy. Later, they called off the engagement. Later in 2010, she got married to businessman Samrat. However, the marriage did not last long and they got divorced in 2012.
