Ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali has launched many huge celebrities like Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and others. The latest debutantes in the town are Jaaved Jaaferi's son Meezaan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's niece Sharmin Segal who star in the film Malaal. The film narrates the story of Shiva and Astha, two different people from different backgrounds who experience love.

Malaal did not have a very good first week at the box office. The film performed very poorly with collections of just Rs 2.75 crore nett. Similar films with debutantes, like Loveyatri and Notebook earned Rs 11.14 crore nett and Rs 3.91 crore nett in their respective first weeks.

Meanwhile, the lead actor Meezaan was called as the 'love child' of Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor. Reacting to the same, he said, "I think it’s because I spent three years working on this film and in these three years, I had to grow my hair out and my beard and I think it’s more of the hair and the beard that really made that comparison. But otherwise I feel that I am extremely different from both of them. But it is a big, big compliment to be compared to or even be considered the lovechild of the two of them. It’s weird but it’s a big compliment."
