EXCLUSIVE: Saif Ali Khan on his marriage to Kareena Kapoor Khan termed as LOVE GOALS: Don't put nazar on it
In an EXCLUSIVE chat with Pinkvilla, Saif Ali Khan spoke candidly about his decade long journey with wife Kareena Kapoor Khan, how son Taimur Ali Khan has changed their life and will we see Saifeena in a film together soon.
Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan aka Saifeena (they're not extremely fond of that ship name btw) complete six years together as a married couple. It was on October 16, 2012, when Saif and Kareena united in holy matrimony and a million hearts fluttered. In 2018, Saif and Kareena are still going stronger than ever and have a baby boy Taimur Ali Khan, who is just as loved as his famous parents.
On the occasion of their anniversary, I had a candid chat with Saif who was treating his darling wife with a foot massage, and she was listening to all the nice things her hubby had to say about the actress. The first question I asked him was what were the Nawabi couple's anniversary plans. The answer was not a party but a quiet dinner with Taimur instead. "We're not under pressure to do anything spectacular. A nice dinner where we exchange our gifts and spend some time with Taimur and that's it. Mainly because we both are trying to be healthy," Saif said.
We further spoke about Kareena's qualities and what he admires most about his wife. "There are obvious things like loyalty...giving importance to family, being grounded and not being too carried away with all the work that we can get carried away by. Having your priorities straight - time for family, time for friends, that is the most important. Along with work being important as well but not obsessing to the point of cut-throat decisions and doing everything for that and then ending up only having that (laughs). As a wife, not being very pushy and demanding. Being very easy going about a lot of things. You've got to be easy to live with if you want someone to live with you happily. She's very easy to live with," Saif gushed.
The comic in Saif was in full force during our chat as he also quipped, "Not sure she would say the same about me though! (laughs) She'll say something like, 'he allows me to be what I want to be', but I have no choice."
I could not leave Taimur out of this conversation given the nation's obsession with the tiny munchkin. But how has Saif and Kareena's life changed post Taimur? Saif revealed, "Life is finite, right? You don't know how long you have but it's good to move on from things. We've had a lot of fun as a couple alone. Now, with Taimur in our lives, it's a little different but more special and we're certainly ready for it. If you're not ready for it, it can imbalance you. So much changes, in a nice way. Priority wise, very little comes, as I'd rather spend time with Taimur and my family than do almost anything now. That's a change. Just watching him run around gives us a lot of joy. It's nice to see both of us in him."
Saif added, "Our timings have changed. We've become more responsible. We sleep earlier. We wake up earlier because he is up at the crack of dawn. Your mental timetable is more based around him than around yourself. And that's a welcome change. I like a bit more stable routine and he is helping me do that. I'm very happy about it!"
Another thing fans like me want to know is when will we get to see the hottest Bollywood couple in another film. On this, Saif shared, "I'm enjoying acting in a different way and I'm learning so much about it and growing. Earlier, I used to say no but now, I feel maybe. If someone offers us something and it has to be special."
Were they offered anything in the recent past? "We've got 1-2 dodgy offers. (laughs) One person said, 'I've got a great idea for a film. You and Kareena ma'am.' He said it will be a "lovely, fresh story" just for us. I didn't reply to him. If something great comes along with someone great; it has to be a different take. When you're comfortable with each other...comfort is the enemy of cinema. Discomfort and tension are what you want in scripts and everything. Working with strangers is more interesting for the audience, and it's more interesting for us. It's a selfish profession. When guys shoot with girls, sometimes they are more worried about their triceps and how their hair is looking. They are not bothered about the girl. That is why real couples are sometimes less interesting."
Ending things on a more serious note, given the recent celebrity breakups which are on a rampage, I wondered what was the secret for Saif and Kareena's marriage being so successful. As netizens would claim, Saifeena is 'LOVE GOALS'! When I posed this thought to Saif, he quipped, "Please don't put nazar on it!"(laughs)
"We are not the love gurus and relationship experts. One of the reasons is, we actually have quite a healthy life, in the sense that we have time together and we have time apart. We have lives and careers that actually don't concern each other. There's enough happening without getting on each other's nerves as it were, at least for the kind of people we are. There is a little bit of individuality and there's enough togetherness. You don't get the feeling that you have to be stifled or that you need to make a change because everything seems well balanced. If we have been lucky enough, it's because there is a balance that suits our personalities. I think that is the key to it. There is no secret mantra. We're just bumbling along like everybody else. Also, the actual bottom line is you have to be a bit unconditional in your loving like you are with children. You can't really expect or get too worked up about things. You have to be unconditional and not sweat the small stuff. If your partner has the right intention, then you shouldn't bother about little things," Saif concluded.
