Actor Girish Karnad passes away at 81 in Bengaluru

Girish Karnad who is best known for his roles in Bollywood movies such as Tiger Zinda Hai, Shivaay and 8 x 10 Tasveer among others passed away at his residence in Bengaluru today. He was 81. Apart from acting, he was also a playwright and director. The prolific writer's plays have been translated into many languages. In 1998, he was conferred Jnanapith Award, the highest literary honour conferred in India for his contributions to literature and theatre. He was bestowed with Padma Shri in 1974 and Padma Bhushan in the year 1992 by the Government of India for his contribution to the field of arts. He is also the recipient of 4 Filmfare Awards.
Speaking about his personal life, he was born in Matheran, Maharashtra on May 19, 1938. In 1958, he got his Bachelor's degree from Karnataka University in 1958. He later studied philosophy, politics and economics at the Oxford University where he secured his M.A. degree in the year 1963. While studying at the University of Oxford, he wrote his first play Yayati in 1961, and the same was critically acclaimed. His other acclaimed plays include Tughlaq (1964) and Hayavadana (1972).

Author Amitav Ghosh wrote: "Saddened to hear of the passing of Girish Karnad - a great writer and a very important public voice. Thoughts are with @rkarnad and his family". Former Chief Minister of Karnataka Sadananda Gowda tweeted, "The news of the death of Gyanapitha awardee, senior theater artist Dr. Girish Karnad, was revealed. His contribution to the Saraswat world is vast. Let us pray in the Lord that peace be to the soul."
He is survived by his wife Dr Saraswathi Ganapathy, son Raghu and daughter Radha.
