EXCLUSIVE: Sohum Shah on 1 Year of Tumbbad: There will definitely be a sequel or prequel

A film that managed to leave every movie fanatic in awe of the storyline as well as the VFX was Sohum Shah starrer Tumbbad. Almost a year ago, Tumbbad hit the screens and the magic of the film began spreading all across the globe. Tumbbad’s story revolves around a family that constructs a shrine for a monster in order to get its wealth for themselves. However, the monster is not to be worshipped and in return, the family faces some deadly consequences. Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, Tumbbad was produced by Aanand L Rai and Sohum Shah.

While the plot and the performance by Sohum Shah is amazing, it was the VFX of the film in each scene that stood out and impressed every cinegoer. Even though it took 6 years for Tumbbad to become a reality, it surely impressed everyone with its storyline, performances and of course, the VFX. As the film clocked in 1 year, Pinkvilla got in touch with actor-producer Sohum Shah, who played the role of Vinayak Rao in Tumbbad. Sohum opened up on the possibility of having a sequel or a prequel to Tumbbad and also expressed what he felt about the response to the film.

Q: How was the response and now the film has completed a year. How you do see it?

A: I have got an amazing response. Even people tell me today we couldn’t watch the film in the theatre and now when we watched it, we loved it. There are people who say thank you to make a film like this and why don’t you release it.  The first day was a big disappointment but critics and word of mouth made the film stay in the theatre for 50 days. The film is still reaching people. It feels amazing that you have put in efforts and that’s not wasted. I don’t know what masala movies are or what the formula was. I think every person has a personality and when I heard this story and I thought its an Indian story. When I make a film, the story attracts me. I don’t know how to add the percentage of comedy and action.

We thought we could get away with a fake mustache on screen but it looked too false... That's when I realized there is no replacement to complete commitment. This handlebar mustache is a result of 6 months of no shaving! #TumbbadThisFriday

Q: Will there be a prequel or sequel?

A: There will definitely be a sequel or prequel. When we were making Tumbbad then we had thought about it. It's such an interesting world hastar, dadi and all interesting characters. Right now, we are not able to crack a story and we are thinking about it. I don’t look at like a business person that if your film is successful then make a sequel which makes no sense. You should get a story and feel the dedication to give the time of your life.

Q: How did you prepare for the role and the film?

A: Initially I had to train a lot. All the actors were Maharashtrians. With an accent, you don’t understand. I had done everything. When I saw the first cut everyone was sounding Marathi and I was sounding Haryanavi. I did everything that was in the director's mind.

After all the love we've received from you all in the past year humne decide kiya ki aap sab ke liye kuch special karenge #Tumbbad ke first anniversary pe. #1YearOfTumbbad.

Q: First three days were very different as compared to any other film but it picked up later and did well. How do you see that?

A: Till 11th October we didn’t know what will happen. We were excited I thought life will change. Then on the day of release, I was depressed. Everyone said that the film will be out in a week. The love what I got post that and the word of mouth, the film ran at the BO for 7 weeks. Then it made me happy and then every day became better post 12 October till now.

Q: Is there pressure for the next film?

A: I can’t make a film by taking the pressure. You have to work with heart and then even if you fall, you will learn from it.
