Sairat fame Nagraj Manjule’s ex wife: He made me go for abortions; thrashed me when asked to keep the child
Nagraj Manjule's ex-wife Sunita Manjule revealed some alleged shocking details about the Sairat director. Sunita shared that Nagraj made her go for abortions and thrashed her when she asked to keep the child.

Nagraj Manjule, director of the critically and commercially acclaimed Marathi film Sairat (2016), has always been termed as an adversary for women. Even his movies highlight the trials and tribulations that women face in their lives due to societal pressures. Hence, it comes as a stark surprise that Nagraj could be the complete opposite than what meets the eye. In a detailed narration to Quint, Nagraj's ex-wife Sunita Manjule revealed some alleged shocking details about the filmmaker that will leave you stumbled.
It was at the ripe age of 18-19 years that Sunita wed Nagraj, then a hopeful aspirant to become a big filmmaker. As the eldest daughter-in-law, she was in charge of taking care of the family in the village while Nagraj studied in the city. As Sunita would toil day and night for his family, Nagraj promised her that when he becomes a big filmmaker, he will take her away from their village to Mumbai. "There were problems in our marriage but I overlooked them because I was devoted to my husband, and because of that, to his family. That’s all every Indian woman does, right?" a naive Sunita asked.
When his short film Pistulya was honored at the National Film Awards, Sunita was in for a rude shock. While Nagraj's entire family went to Delhi for the award ceremony, Sunita was locked inside her house by them.
Then onwards, the distance grew thicker between the husband and wife. Nagraj would bring his male and female friends to their house and she would cook and serve for them. However, the filmmaker never acknowledged her. This was how their marriage fell apart and she even begged him to let her stay with his family and retain his surname but to no avail. Eventually, she went back to her parents. The divorce was filed in 2012 and was finalised in 2014 with Sunita getting a meagre Rs 7 lakhs.
Sunita wishes that she could have had a child of her own but it was not possible as Nagraj would scold her on the same matter stating that his filmy dreams would be bogged down by familial ties. "This is why he made me go for 2-3 abortions, and whenever I raised my voice for keeping the child, he thrashed me, with his bare hands, leather belt and sometimes, a log of wood," Sunita shared with Quint.
As of now, Sunita lives with her parents and works as a maid in different households while Nagraj is a celebrated filmmaker.
