Against the backdrop of Har Har Mahadev and five forgettable tracks in the gap of just one hour, the first half of Kaashi: In Search of Ganga feels more like a musical than a suspense thriller. Starring Sharman Joshi, the only saving grace about Kaashi is well, Sharman Joshi himself.

Kaashi is a story set in Benaras and is about Kaashi Chaudhary (Sharman), a dom (corpse-burner) and his pursuit to find his missing sister Ganga (Priyanka Singh). In between, there is a love story between Kaashi and journalist Devina (Aishwarya Devan). The problem arises when the college where Ganga used to study refuses to believe that there was ever a student named Ganga.

When it comes to the performances, it is Sharman who stands out with his temperament acting, but the melodramatic script is not of any assistance to the underrated actor. However, when it comes to Sharman's Benarasi accent, it seemed far too superficial in comparison to the authenticity of the supporting characters. Priyanka does not have many scenes given how she is supposedly the second lead in the film and hence one can't judge her performance at all. Aishwarya is more of the prototype love interest given a 'career' just to make it believable that she is nothing more than a prop to further the storyline.

The heart of Kaashi is supposedly the brother-sister bond but more focus is given to the irrelevant love stories between Kaashi and Devina and Ganga and her boyfriend Abhimanyu. Kaashi should have paid equal attention to the family bond as that is the derivative of the film. This is why I found it hard to care and instead sigh out loud that Ganga went missing. Adding to this, the poor editing skills and nonchalance of the characters is careless given the brevity of the situation.

Having gone to Benares myself, Kaashi has showcased the city in its true and purest form, from the cremation grounds to the auspicious Ganga aarti.

Here's hoping the second half gives us a mystery that we actually want to be solved.
