EXCLUSIVE: SS Rajamouli’s RRR with Jr. NTR, Ram Charan gets Rs 350 crore offer, creates HISTORY down South
In January, SS Rajamouli announced that his next directorial, RRR, fronted by Jr. NTR and Ram Charan will hit the big screen during the Dussehra weekend on October 13. The announcement spurred excitement among the trade in North and South alike, considering that it marks the return of SS Rajamouli after the historic success of Bahubali 2, which is the biggest blockbuster of Indian cinema. The period drama also marks the first-time collaboration of the top names from Telugu industry, Jr. NTR and Ram Charan.
Pinkvilla has now learnt that the makers of this film, set in the 1900s, has started getting exorbitant offers from distributors across the India to bag the theatrical rights. A trade source reveals, “The RRR team has received offers from Independent distributors from different territories of Southern states which amounts to Rs 348 crore. It’s going to be the biggest deal in the history of Telugu cinema, defeating the pre-release business of Bahubali 2, which had collected approximately Rs 215 crore from the South speaking states.”
The Rs 348 crore offer is for the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam version, whereas the Hindi version will be released by AA Films (Anil Thadani) on commission basis. The general expectation from the Hindi version is also high and the rights eventually will be valued around Rs 100 crore. The overseas rights of RRR have already been sold to Phars Films for a huge sum of Rs 70 crore. An estimated revenue for the producers of RRR even before the release of the film just from the sale of worldwide theatrical rights is over Rs 500 crore, which speaks volumes about the anticipation around this SS Rajamouli directorial.
The film also features Alia Bhatt and Olivia Morris as the female leads alongside Ram Charan and Jr. NTR, with Ajay Devgn in a key extended cameo. The presence of Alia and Ajay is expected to give a boost to the film’s biz in Hindi belts. The period drama is a fictional take on the younger days of celebrated freedom fighters Komaram Bheem (Jr. NTR) and Alluri Seetharamaraju (Ram Charan).
A bifurcation of theatrical rights offers down for South Indian Versions:
- Andhra Pradesh: Rs 165 crore
- Nizam: Rs 75 crore
- Tamil Nadu: Rs 48 crore
- Karnataka: Rs 45 crore
- Kerala: Rs 15 crore
- Total: Rs 348 crore (Approx)
