EXCLUSIVE: Tannishtha Chatterjee on society’s obsession with fair skin: It is related to caste system
In an exclusive conversation with Pinkvilla, Tannishtha Chatterjee has opened up on prejudice in society on the basis of skin colour and how we can bring a change in the present scenario.
Tannishtha Chatterjee is one of the actresses in Bollywood, who is not just known for her acting prowess and impressive line of work, but also for being vocal about issues like racism. The diva had grabbed the eyeballs when had walked about of a comedy show after witnessing a racist joke during the promotions of her 2015 release film Parched. While Tannishtha continues to be outspoken about racism in our society, in an exclusive conversation with Pinkvilla, the actress shared her views about the society’s obsession with fair skin.
Talking about the same, Tannishtha stated that this biasedness is the result of the caste system that has been prevalent in our society for ages. The actress mentioned how people have the notion that a person with fair skin belongs to the upper cast and so is the case otherwise. “I think it is related to the caste system in our country. This is actually such a prejudice. And now I understood that where that hatred comes from because it actually comes from the fact that we hate our minorities, we hate our castes who are not upper castes. And anyone who looks like them in your mind is also hated,” she added.
Meanwhile, Tannishtha is of the opinion that it is high time to show society the mirror which can be done through stories and a slight change is coming up as there has been an acknowledgement about the prejudice in the society. Besides, she also opines that education is quite important to improve the situation in the society.
