Is Lee Jung Jae’s Squid Game Season 4 in pipeline? Director reveals plans for storyline expansion and spin‑off series
Squid Game director Hwang Dong Hyeok reveals if Season 4 is in the works. He also hints at possible spin-offs exploring untold character backstories as the series prepares for its June 27 release.

Netflix's global phenomenon Squid Game is approaching its highly anticipated conclusion, with Season 3 set to premiere on June 27, 2025. A press conference was held in Seoul on June 9. Director Hwang Dong Hyeok addressed long-standing speculation about the series' future. He clarified once and for all that Season 3 will be the final installment of the main story.
Director confirms: No season 4 in the works
Speaking candidly at the event, Hwang Dong Hyeok stated that there are no current plans for a fourth season. He emphasized that the narrative arc has been designed to conclude with the third season.
As quoted by Koreaboo, "There are no plans to make a season four," he said. "It is something we discussed and worked on while working on Season three."
However, Hwang also left a small window open for interpretation. While the third season brings closure to the core storyline, the ending may suggest future possibilities. "If you watch the series, you might think that a fourth season is possible, but it doesn't necessarily have to be made," he noted.
Possibility of a spin-off
Though a continuation of the main series seems off the table, Hwang revealed that he's still interested in exploring the Squid Game universe. He is particularly considering expanding it through spin-offs. While his next project is a film, he admitted he often finds himself thinking about side stories.
“If you ask me if I have no intention of returning to the series, that is not the case,” he explained. “I have a movie planned for my next project, so I don’t have any immediate plans, but I’m thinking about doing a spin-off if I get the chance.”
This comment has sparked excitement among fans who remain curious about the untold backstories of key players in the series.
A star-studded final season
Season 3 promises to deliver a gripping conclusion to the survival thriller that hooked viewers worldwide. Returning star Lee Jung Jae reprises his role as Seong Gi Hun, joined once again by Wi Ha Joon and Lee Byung Hun. Supporting cast members Im Siwan, Kang Ha Neul, Park Gyu Younga, and Park Sung Hoon are also set to appear.
With its global release slated for June 27 on Netflix, Squid Game Season 3 is expected to draw immense attention. As fans gear up for the finale, all eyes are now on Hwang Dong Hyeok’s next move.
