EXCLUSIVE: Alia Bhatt to sing for Gangubai Kathiawadi; Sanjay Leela Bhansali will compose the number
Earlier this week, actress Alia Bhatt unveiled the teaser of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, and received encouraging responses from the audience and celebrities alike. Right from Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Farhan Akhtar to Priyanka Chopra, Ram Charan, SS Rajamouli and Varun Dhawan, everyone was all praise for the teaser. Now, Pinkvilla has a new update on this much awaited film and it’s leading lady. A source close to the development informs that Alia will be singing for this upcoming period-drama.
“Alia is a really good singer, while Mr. Bhansali is a celebrated composer, so the duo decided to collaborate for a song in the film. The composition will be in a more intense space and both Mr Bhansali and Alia are looking forward to it,” informs the source. Meanwhile, Ajay Devgn will start shooting for the film from tomorrow, where the actress will join him too. A massive set of Ajay’s character’s house has been created in Mumbai’s Filmcity studio.
Interestingly, Alia has earlier lent her voice for the unplugged version of ‘Samjhawan’ from Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, for ‘Humsafar’ in Badrinath Ki Dulhania and for Udta Punjab’s ‘Ikk Kudi’ with Diljit Dosanjh.
Gangubai Kathiawadi is inspired by a chapter from Hussain Zaidi's novel Mafia Queens of Mumbai. The acclaimed author too was all praise for the teaser. “The teaser is really good and Alia is absolutely stunning. I was always sure that Mr Bhansali is someone who would do justice to this story, and I think Mr. Bhansali and Alia together have done an amazing job,” he had told Pinkvilla.
We reached out to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s team but they chose not to respond.

Alia has done a good job but somehow it feels very forced - she does not have the physicality or gravitas to pull a role like this... just like kalank, this seems to be a case of miscasting

Alia is not a versatile actress. And she is not beautiful. She totally fell flat on the face with this movie
