Movie: Student of the Year 2

Director: Punit Malhotra

Cast: Ananya Panday, Tara Sutaria, Tiger Shroff

Rating: 2.5/5

Karan Johar made his directorial debut with campus romance drama Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which went on to become a classic romantic drama of all time. After directing many films, he made SOTY (2012), which of course couldn't recreate the same magic of SRK and Kajol starrer, but still was well received by the audience. And now after 6 years, KJo is back with the sequel to the 2012 film and this time Punit Malhotra of I Hate Love Storys fame helmed the same.
So talking about SOTY 2, yes, it is again a movie from KJo's cannon and is packed with all larger than life, ostentatious, OTT theatrics and a yawn-worthy twist. The movie opens with Tiger's character Rohan dreaming of being the Student of the Year with his girlfriend Mridula aka Mia (Tara) by his side. But he wakes up and reveals how his GF is now in Dehradun's St. Teresa which is the same college that he aspires to be, but currently, he is studying in a mediocre level college named Pishorilal Chamandas College in Mussoorie which has a weird couple who are the principal of it.
And then, we are introduced to Shreya (Ananya) and her brother Manav (Aditya Seal). They are spoilt brats and their dad is a college trustee. Later, finally, Tiger gets admission into St. Teresa and cold war ensues between Rohan and the brother-sister duo of Shreya and Manav. Soon, a lot of drama, which includes cheating, fights and actors breaking into a jig at drop of hat unfolds till one of them emerges as the Student of the Year.
Speaking of the performances, lead star Tiger Shroff fares well, but he hardly looks like a college kid to me. On the other hand, Tara Sutaria who is marking their Bollywood debut with this movie has delivered an average performance. Talking about Ananya, another debutante was good in parts and will surely remind you of Alia Bhatt. YouTuber Harsh Beniwal plays the role of Tiger's sidekick; he manages to steal the show with his scenes which actually do induce snorts of laughter among the audience.
Talking about the setbacks, the movie will let you down by a predictable plot as some parts which could have been better were actually written shabbily. The abrupt ending and cliched treatment in many places spoils the movie. The film also falters when it comes to length as I felt it was quite lengthy with the last chunk of Kabaddi competition too was stretched unnecessarily.
All in all, this tale of friendship and love lacks soul, but if you are looking for snacky and breezy entertainment and sucker of rom-coms then go and grab the tickets for this film this weekend. But if you do not like sports and expecting serious on-screen love then you can give it a miss.

It’s kinda a good movie.. like one time show

well.. there is a reason both janhvi as well as sara rejected the movie..

atleast tiger's dance and action can excuse his lack of acting.
whats ananya and tara's excuse?

i've heard ananya sucked. so i am very confused by the pinkvilla comments.

KJO even you paid journalists to write good about but public has already declared this as FLOP and at the end of day ,ypu can't fool the audience. And clearly you're just making shitty movies now with average star kids, the sharukh and Kajol era is gone, when then you used to atleast bring something on the table.RIP DHARMA.

It is not at all a boring movie. It is fast paced and entertaining. Good direction

What else did you expect ?

Kalank Kesari SOTY2 wow dharma productions is raining flops .

Can't judge Tara based on this movie there was no much scope for her character ananya got a meatier role and she put it to good use .of the few laughs in the theatre majority were for her punchlines

Tara has no screen presence. Ananya is better loking than Alia. Actually Tara is also better looking than Alia. Aditya Seal is a next big thing if Tiger with his connections would let him to be.

Ananya was really good in the movie very refreshing and yeah comic timing it was on point

Thank god for poor reviews on KJo’s movies. He need to be brought down from his non-existing and self-created pedestal.

Tara is better actor and she has to choose good movies , I think she is the next best thing in industry ❤️

You think wrong. Without skin show, thigh high skirts Tara has no presence. To be the next beig thing you need to look good in clothes and saris. Ananya is better looking and is prettier than Alia.

Terrible film watched and regretted

SOTY2 was supposed to be debut for Ananya and Tara. The movie should have been focussing on them and not Tiger but it’s exactly the opposite. Both the girls should have known that this isn’t a good movie to debut with when Sara is rumored to have rejected it. Not that Sara is the best actress but there’s definitely a good reason if a star kid chooses to reject KJo’s movie I feel.

It was clear from the trailer itself that SOTY2 has no content compared to SOTY. Was SOTY Karan’s best directorial? No but it was watchable unlike SOTY2. I hope Tara now realises her mistake of choosing this over Kabir Singh or Aladdin. There’s no guarantee that Kabir Singh will be a hit but she would have been appreciated better I feel. Hopefully she excels better in Marjavan although that too may flop since Sid hasn’t produced a hit in years now.

SOTY was a shitty film so i can imagine how awful this must be with a hero like Tiger yuck ! I hope its a B.O disaster like kalank. I want to see Kjo in tatters.

and despite all this negativity, unfortunately the film will be a hit

Ananya does have potential, her expressions are strong and you can tell she would excel in comic roles, which is rare for actresses

I love when pinkvilla is alawys honest about giving reviews ..thanks for saving my money not watching this movie

Flop movie
